Protective Styles for Natural Hair: Scarves
Natural hair and it's versatility provides curly girls with an endless variety of hair styles. For most people, the goal of hair care is the extend the length of one's hair. Those who have been on this journey for a while know that the only way to grow hair is by preserving and protecting it. When I refer to the term “natural hair” I mean African American hair, which is curly/kinky in some sense and has a degree of natural dryness. People with tightly curled, even if they are not African American, have the same similar issues with dryness. Never the less, the best way to grown hair long and strong is through protection.
Protective styles have definitely evolved since the time I first began my natural hair journey. For me at the beginning, it was all about braid outs and twist outs. Until now, I have recently began using scarves to style my hair. It's all the rage now a days, and they are so much fun! With all the colors and patterns, it's hard to get bored with them. Even then, there are so many ways to tie a scarf on your head.
The first way to tie a scarf is one that I love and use the most. It works great with a wash and gos and braid out or twist out styles. It simply looks like this...
You can style this with a bang or without. I like it both ways...it's even fun when your curls can cascade out and around the top.
Second Style
The second style I like to do with my scarves is band my hair and place a scarf around the top of head. This sounds kind of silly but this is how it looks...
This style is fun and different. It's great for it you have the one protective style you don't quite feel comfortable exposing to the public.
Third Style
The third scarf style I like to do is similar the second one but instead there is a ponytail. When I first set my ponytail I like to slick my hair back with gel to keep away fly away and frizzy curls. After the gel is in place, I allow my hair to dry with a scarf. Sometimes I have to leave the house when my hair has not completely finished drying. My solution for this is to place a nice looking scarf on my head so that it doesn't look sloppy or as if I have just rolled out of bed. This style looks like this...
Cool right! There are 100s of different ways to use scarves to style and/or protect natural hair. I just wanted to show you three of my current favorites.
And a cool little side note, most of the scarves I find are from thrift stores!
If you like scarves, where is your favorite place to find them?
