Ways to Go Natural Part 2
By KySmith
Going natural to embrace the way we were naturally made is an exciting decision and some people just want to get right to it. If this is you then you may be interested in just doing the big chop without a transition.
The big chop is very daunting for most people so they choose to transition for a long period of time before they do the big chop.
When a person does the big chop they cut off all of their chemically processed or relaxed hair and are only left with natural hair.
The purpose of transitioning is to allow that person to feel more secure and comfortable with their length before they get rid of the chemically treated ends.
Transitioning is a great way to ease your way into the natural world but doing the big chop without a transition is also beneficial.
It is beneficial to go natural without transitioning because of the chance to get to know your hair better. When your hair is shorter you can easily get used to caring for it.
The shorter hair is also relatively low maintenance so you won’t be spending hours on your hair when you’re getting used to being natural.
This method of going natural allows you to enjoy the journey of growing your natural texture out. It’s fun to see how it changes as it grows out.
You will be an expert with you hair by the time you get back to your original length.
Another advantage of not doing the big chop is the fact that you don’t have to deal with two textures that you would have to deal with going through a transition.
You get to start off fresh.
You can try different products without using too much or spending to much because your hair will be shorter and will require less product.
The last advantage of going natural without the big chop is the feeling of liberation. When women don’t have to worry about their hair getting messed up or worry about the next time they need to get a relaxer they feel free!
No more worrying about messing up your hair in the rain or going swimming. No more worrying about sweating out a fresh relaxer. You are able to have stress free and relatively low maintenance hair.
Doing the big chop without transitioning means that you will have a TWA which stands for a Teeny Weeny Afro. A TWA is fun and easy to style.
You may think that there is not much that you can do with a TWA but there are many ways to style it and accessorize it.
Flowers and headbands are always cute ways to dress up you short hair. But of course you can decide to leave it the way it is because it’s cute that way also!
For those of you who want to do the big chop and are afraid, think about the reasons you want to go natural and think about what is holding you back.
You should be doing it for yourself and not for others. If you are confident and love your hair nothing else matters. If you chop your hair and you don’t like it, don’t worry!
You can wear wigs and when your hair gets long enough you can get braids until you are comfortable. And don’t forget, you can always transition to a length you are comfortable with.
I hope you found something valuable from reading this article.

Thank you!
Hi Ky-It is great that you advice others to enjoy their beauty without chemicals. There are plenty of natural products or ways to manage our hair. There are natural oils or products and many are organic. You can even grow your own product line--that is nice. I like hats too-they are natural ways to go fashionable even when the hair is not cooperating :-)
ps. welcome to hubpages and thanks for following!
Thank you for the welcome. I appreciate your comment! I love organic products and I hope that one day I can product my own line of organic products.
I permed my hair then did the big chop is that ok and my was thin before I cut it will it grow to be thicker?
@alexis, thanks for commenting. It is fine to do the big chop right after perming your hair. I really shouldn't matter. While I was relaxed my hair was fine, once I went natural my hair was a lot thicker.
I'm not sure if that will be the case for you but usually natural hair is much thicker than relaxed hair.
I hope this helps! Thanks for reading! :)
Great hub! I'm transitioning also, and this was very useful.
